Skibbereen and Baltimore are neighbouring settlements in West Cork, about 10km apart along the River Ilen and its estuary. Skibbereen is the region's principal market town, with a population of 2,778 recorded in Census 2022, and is closely associated with the Great Famine, a history documented at the Skibbereen Heritage Centre. Baltimore is a small harbour village at the tip of the peninsula — a sailing, angling, and diving centre and the ferry gateway to Sherkin Island, Cape Clear, and the islands of Roaringwater Bay. It is overlooked by the Baltimore Beacon, a white-painted navigational tower on the headland known locally as 'Lot's Wife'.
