Salthill is a seaside suburb to the south-west of Galway city centre, on the shore of Galway Bay; the 2016 census recorded a population of 3,650. Developed as a Victorian bathing resort, it retains a two-kilometre promenade, known locally as "the Prom", opened in 1856. Other landmarks include the Blackrock diving tower, built in 1953 and used for Christmas Day swimming, and Pearse Stadium, a Galway GAA venue.
