Athenry is a medieval town in County Galway, some 25km east of Galway city, notable for retaining around 70% of its original town wall circuit. The 2022 census recorded a population of 4,603. Landmarks include Athenry Castle, built before 1240; the 13th-century Dominican Priory; and the late 15th-century Market Cross, the only medieval cross still standing in its original position in Ireland.
