Clonmel is the largest town in County Tipperary, on the River Suir in the south of the county, with a population of around 18,000 at the 2022 Census; its name means 'meadow of honey'. Historically a walled town, surviving features include the West Gate and sections of the medieval walls. It was the birthplace of the Bianconi transport network in 1815 and of the novelist Laurence Sterne.
