Carlow is the county town of Carlow, on the River Barrow in the southeast midlands about 80 km from Dublin, with a population of around 25,000 at the 2022 Census. Landmarks include the remains of Carlow Castle, a 13th-century Norman fortress; the Brownshill Dolmen, whose capstone is reputedly the heaviest in Europe; and the Cathedral of the Assumption, completed in 1833. The town is home to the South East Technological University.
