Athlone is a town on the River Shannon near the geographic centre of Ireland, straddling the Westmeath–Roscommon border about 120 km west of Dublin, with a population of over 22,000 at the 2022 Census. It is dominated by the 13th-century Athlone Castle guarding the river crossing, and is home to Sean's Bar, which claims to be Ireland's oldest pub. The Technological University of the Shannon has a major campus in the town.
